Our Ethical Approach to Shark Teeth and Sustainability
As a company focused on products born of nature, ethics and sustainability are at the core of what we do. Below, you’ll find more about how these values shape our sourcing — and how they’re woven into our broader approach to business.
The Ethics of Shark Teeth
Every shark tooth we offer is sourced responsibly, with a commitment to preserving both living ecosystems and historical integrity.
- Fossilized teeth come from miners, divers, and collectors exploring the remnants of ancient oceans. These are naturally shed teeth, preserved in sediment over millions of years. No prehistoric sharks were harmed.
- Modern teeth in our collection are not actively sourced from ongoing fishing operations. Instead, many were acquired decades ago, with large portions of our inventory tracing back to supply orders from the 1990s and early 2000s. Others come from legal, sustainable by-catch or natural seabed recovery.
We understand that even by-product sourcing carries ethical implications, and we encourage our customers to ask questions. Transparency matters, and we strive to uphold the highest standards in everything we sell.
The Sustainability of E-Commerce
Online retail carries an environmental footprint — from shipping emissions to packaging waste. At Prehistoria, we work to reduce our impact:
- Quality over quantity. We focus on exceptional craftsmanship and curation. Products that last longer create less waste.
- Thoughtful materials. We prioritize natural, certified, and recycled components in both packaging and product design.
- Minimizing returns. Accurate descriptions and careful quality control reduce unnecessary shipping.
Our flagship product — the shark tooth — is one of nature’s most enduring forms. Whether fossilized or modern, it reminds us of what it means to live in balance with the planet’s deep past and fragile present.
