This necklace features an authentic Otodus obliquus shark tooth from the Eocene epoch, approximately 50 million years old. Each tooth showcases the characteristic triangular crown and prominent lateral cusps that define this extinct mackerel shark lineage — direct ancestors of the mighty Megalodon.
The fossilized root has been hand-painted with a subtle pearl brown finish featuring natural iridescence, then clear-coated for durability. The tooth is expertly wrapped with gold-toned wire and hangs on a black woven cord, adjustable from 21 to 23 inches.
Otodus sharks dominated ancient seas as apex predators, reaching lengths of 30 feet. These particular specimens show exceptional preservation with intact enamel and well-defined cusps — markers of quality that serious collectors recognize. The lack of serrations confirms these as Otodus obliquus, the earlier form in this evolutionary lineage.
Scientific Significance: Otodus represents a critical stage in shark evolution, bridging the gap between early Paleocene sharks and the eventual emergence of Carcharocles megalodon. These teeth provide a tangible connection to the Eocene epoch's warm seas, when the Atlantic was still forming and early whales shared the oceans with these formidable predators.
Please Note: Each tooth is a genuine fossil specimen. Natural variations in size (averaging 7/8 inch), color, and preservation are expected and ensure your necklace is absolutely unique.
These are available in very limited in quantity.
